The flesh is firm rather than crisp, but with plenty of juice.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orangepippin.com\/varieties\/apples\/ashmeads-kernel\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Ashmeads Kernel<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Russeted apple.  From orangepippin.com: &quot;Ashmeads Kernel has remained popular for well over 2 centuries, and with good reason: it has a distinctive flavour which is quite different from most other varieties.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orangepippin.com\/varieties\/apples\/baldwin\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Baldwin<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Good keeper, juice valuable in hard cider, and it does well here in the Boulder area.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pomiferous.com\/applebyname\/blanc-mollet-id-6916\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Blanc Mollet<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; French bittersweet hard cider apple from the 1700s.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orangepippin.com\/varieties\/apples\/cortland\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Cortland<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A McIntosh-like apple.  Good for juice and fresh eating when perfectly ripe, but doesn&#8217;t store as well as some.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orangepippin.com\/varieties\/apples\/duchess-of-oldenburg\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Duchess of Oldenburg<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 1700s Russian apple, early season.  One of the apples used to breed Honeycrisp.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orangepippin.com\/varieties\/apples\/esopus-spitzenberg\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Esopus Spitzenburg<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Late 1700s New York apple.  Very good eating apple.  Keeps well.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orangepippin.com\/varieties\/apples\/fireside\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Fireside<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Good for pies, sauce, and fresh eating.  Ripens later in the harvest season.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orangepippin.com\/varieties\/apples\/freedom\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Freedom<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Good for fresh eating and pies. One source recommends it highly as a dried apple.  Resistant to two diseases, scab and cedar apple rust, that aren&#8217;t big problems here.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pomiferous.com\/applebyname\/goldstar-id-1594\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Gold Star<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Pomiferous: &quot;Moderately sweet with some tartness and perfumed, fruity aroma.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orangepippin.com\/varieties\/apples\/golden-russet\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Golden Russet<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Eric&#8217;s favorite apple &#8212; if I could only eat one apple ever again, I&#8217;d choose this one.  Dense, bursting with flavor.  High BRIX makes it valuable for hard cider.  Grows well in the Boulder area.  Late harvest season.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orangepippin.com\/varieties\/apples\/grimes-golden\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Grimes Golden<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; One of the parents of Golden Delicious. Unlike most apple cultivars, it is partially self-fertile and does not require another nearby tree for pollination.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pomiferous.com\/applebyname\/gros-frequin-id-7255\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Gros Frequin<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Bittersweet hard cider apple. Gros Frequin has done well on the West Slope and we are trialing it here.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orangepippin.com\/varieties\/apples\/harrison\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Harrison<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Although considered a hard cider apple, I like Harrison for eating out of hand.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orangepippin.com\/varieties\/crab-apples\/hewes-crab\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Hewe&#8217;s Virginia<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A smaller-sized apple (sometimes called a crab), Hewe&#8217;s has notable astringency and is excellent in hard cider.  I also like to eat this variety fresh, however.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orangepippin.com\/varieties\/apples\/kingston-black\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Kingston Black<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A bittersharp hard cider apple.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orangepippin.com\/varieties\/apples\/liberty\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Liberty<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A McIntosh-like apple.  Useful for fresh eating and in hard cider.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orangepippin.com\/varieties\/apples\/crispin\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Mutsu<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Mutsu, also called Crispin, is a Japanese variety.  It is like a very large Golden Delicious.  Good cooking apple and very good for fresh eating.  The largest apple I ever saw was a Mutsu, in California.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orangepippin.com\/varieties\/apples\/prairie-spy\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Prairie Spy<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Prairie Spy is an early University of Minnesota apple that is very cold hardy.  It would be a good one to try in mountain locations.  Good eating apple.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/montezumaorchard.org\/product\/six-finger-jack-5\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Six-finger Jack<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Montezuma Orchard Restoration Project in southwest CO has preserved and propagated this apple.  It has a very high BRIX and would likely be good in hard cider.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orangepippin.com\/varieties\/apples\/smokehouse\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Smokehouse<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A fine cooking and eating apple that keeps very well into the late Winter.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orangepippin.com\/varieties\/apples\/state-fair\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>State Fair<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Summer apple.  Very good when perfectly ripe, but doesn&#8217;t keep for a long time.  A good choice for a small orchard that needs apples of various ripening times.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sweet_Sixteen_(apple)\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Sweet Sixteen<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A fireblight-resistant mid-season ripening apple.  From the University of Minnesota, so it puts up with cold climates.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orangepippin.com\/varieties\/apples\/wealthy\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Wealthy<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Good for many uses.  Commonly found on old homesteads on the Great Plains.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orangepippin.com\/varieties\/apples\/wolf-river\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Wolf River<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A very large apple very good for cooking.
